How Much Does Electrolysis Cost in San Francisco?

Electrolysis is priced by time, not by area. At Celestial Electrolysis, we offer 30-minute and 1-hour sessions; contact us for current rates. Your total cost depends on how much treatment time your hair needs, which we estimate at your consultation.

Why electrolysis is priced by time

Each hair is treated one at a time. A few chin hairs may take minutes; a full beard takes many hours. Paying by time means you pay for the work your hair actually needs.

What changes your total cost

  • Number of hairs. A dense area takes longer to clear than a sparse one.
  • Hair type. Coarse, deep hairs take more time per follicle than fine hairs.
  • Hormones. PCOS, menopause, and testosterone can cause new hairs to grow, which adds regrowth sessions.
  • Past plucking or waxing. Years of plucking can distort follicles, which can take longer to treat.
  • How regularly you come. Keeping a steady schedule catches each hair when it is active, which keeps the total time down.

Typical ranges

These are general ranges, not quotes. Your hair is unique, and we give you a personal estimate.

  • A few chin or upper-lip hairs: short sessions, often 15–30 minutes, over several months.
  • Full chin and jaw (for example, with PCOS): regular sessions for about a year, then occasional maintenance.
  • Full beard clearance: many hours over 1–3 years.
  • Hair removal before surgery: many hours over 6–12 months or more, depending on the area on your surgeon's map.

Is electrolysis worth the cost?

Electrolysis costs more per session than waxing or laser, but each treated hair is gone for good. Over years, clients often spend less than they would on endless waxing, threading, or laser touch-ups, and laser does not work at all on light, grey, or red hair.

Ways to lower the cost

  • Hardship pricing. We offer access pricing case by case. See pricing.
  • Insurance. Many plans cover medically necessary electrolysis, such as gender-affirming care or hair removal before surgery. With a prior authorization from your plan, we bill your insurance directly. See our insurance guide.
  • Laser first, where it fits. For dense, dark hair on suitable skin, laser can reduce the bulk first, so fewer electrolysis hours are needed to finish.

Questions we often hear

What is the average cost of electrolysis? Most electrologists charge by the hour or by shorter blocks of time. The total depends on the area and your hair: a few chin hairs need far less time than a large area such as a full beard. We give you a personal time estimate at your consultation.

Can I use HSA or FSA funds? Medically necessary electrolysis may be eligible. Check with your plan administrator; we can provide receipts and superbills.
